Fiji removes 'tax levies' on investors

  The Fijian administration has removed “remittance taxes” charged on investors in a move to attract more foreign money in to the country.
The measures are now formally in place after the authority to abolish it was announced in last November’s national budget.

The Annual Valedictory Award of the New Zealand Pacific Business Council (NZPBC), honouring Pacific Business Pioneers, was made to Tom McNicholl, the founder of Reef Shipping and Reef Group.  The event was held at the Grange Golf Club on Friday evening, 26 February 2010, with Michael Jones (of rugby fame & Reef Shipping) opened the programme.  Key note speaker the Hon Misa Telefoni Retzlaff, Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa spoke on the important relationship between the Pacific Islands and NZ.
NZPBC Chairman, Gilbert Ullrich welcomed the large number of guests, and whilst detailing the aims and achievements of the NZPBC, drew the audience’s attention to the pending Trade Mission to Fiji & Guam, and the Pacific Trade Expo scheduled for 21-22 September 2010 at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau City.

Exporting to the Pacific . . . Short Term Trade Credit Insurance, US Surety Bonds and General Contract Bonds

Recently the New Zealand Export Credit Office (NZECO) has been supporting export transactions into the Pacific region.
Last year New Zealand exporters, seeking to insure against the risk of a Pacific buyer not paying for their goods, found it increasingly difficult to obtain cover from the private insurers.  The government extended the mandate of the NZECO to enable it to provide short-term trade credit cover on creditworthy buyers that the private insurers lack the capacity or willingness to insure.

Pacific island governments are not playing enough attention to addressing major urban problems such as housing, sanitation and waste management, the United Nations says. The UN Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT) and the Economic and Social
Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) have just carried out a six-month examination of city planning in the region.
