NZ's Trade with the Pacific Improves, But falls with Fiji |

The long term effects of the last coup in Fiji appears to be finally beginning to affect the two-way merchandise trade between Fiji and NZ. The coup was in December 2006, and in the calender year 2006, NZ exported NZ$371.2 million to Fiji and NZ imported NZ $58.4 million from them.

The Business Opportunity Support Scheme (BOSS), initially linking Tonga and New Zealand for a year, became operational in early November 2009. NZ and Tongan businesses may apply for grants to fund feasibility studies to set up or expand business operations in Tonga. TOP$250,000 will be provided in 2009/10. Funding beyond this point will be subject to a review of the effectiveness of the scheme There is a maximum of TOP30,000 per recipient. Recipients will be required to contribute 30% towards the cost of the study, and to report on many aspects of the proposed project before the grant application is considered.

The deterioration of the bilateral relationship between NZ, Australia, and Fiji, which has led to the expulsion of each other’s senior diplomats, does no credit to either government. The NZPBC and Australian Pacific Island Business Council has for almost three years been urging our governments to set aside their differences enough to be able to engage in dialogue.
